John Obercian

John Obercian is a Toronto-based composer, songwriter, and producer working across film, television and Web3. With roots in avant rock and jazz, his approach to scoring is shaped as much by his background as a drummer and songwriter as by his work with orchestral and electronic music. His sound moves between the intimate and the expansive, with an ear for unexpected textures, strong melodic ideas, and the subtleties of storytelling.

His film credits include Deadly Mom Retreat, Sinister Switch, and Deadly Estate, with additional music for Hannah Cheeseman’s The Boathouse. He also scored and mixed the multi award-winning short Platform. His television work includes themes and scores for While the Rest of Us Die (VICE), Restaurants On The Edge (Netflix), Time Warp Trio (NBC),and several long-running HGTV productions. His song “Scuze Me” appears in Workin’ Moms. His upcoming projects include Holding Hope, a climate change focused documentary directed by Terence McGlade.

Beyond the screen, John has written and produced music for CTV, MTV, VICE, and Discovery. His work as a songwriter has led to collaborations with Hawksley Workman, Thomas D’Arcy, Madeline Kirby and Luke Doucet. He was selected for the Canadian Music Publishers Association’s CMP Creates initiative, where he co-wrote “Son in Law” for Hotel Mira’s album Perfectionism.

An alumnus of York University’s Jazz Program and the Banff Centre, John brings a musician’s sensibility to his scores, drawing freely from songwriting, improvisation, and the possibilities of sound itself.
